Panathinaikos out of Champions League after Standard Liege loss at home

Panathinaikos was knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday after being beaten 2-1 at home by Belgian side Standard Liege.

The first leg in Belgium had ended 0-0 and Panathinaikos got off to a great start in Athens when Dino Arslanagic scored an own goal in the 10th minute.

However, the Greens’ joy was short-lived. Yanis Mbombo scored on 36 minutes and Paul-Jose M’Poku on 41 to help the Belgians progress to the play-off round of the competition.

Panathinaikos hit the bar twice in the second half but could not find the goals it needed to go through. The Greek Cup winner will play in the qualifying round of the Europa League instead.
