Gold mine opponents plan protest camp in Halkidiki forest

Opponents of the gold mine in the area of Skouries are planning to camp in the Halkidiki forest from August 22 until the end of the month.

Protesters plan to use this period to organize peaceful demonstrations, concerts and other events to display their opposition to the activities of Canadian-owned Hellas Gold in the area.

Residents, environmentalists and others have engaged in months-long protests against the gold mine, which they argue will destroy the forest.

A total of 29 people face charges in connection to a violent attack on a guard post at the mine last year.

The latest protest in Skouries is due to come a few days after a large pond holding waste matter at one of Imperial Metals Corp’s gold and copper mines in Western Canada spilled gray sludge into waterways.
