Interest in Kranidi growing but water is running low
There has been “unprecedented” interest in expensive real estate in Kranidi, the Peloponnesian town where the Dutch royal family bought a villa in 2012, but there are concerns about whether the water supply in the area is adequate to support a growing jet set population.
“The activity this year is unprecedented,” real estate agent Martha Goutou told Kathimerini. “Over the last three years it has been Russian millionaires who are interested in buying properties. Arabs have also contacted us.”
However, outgoing Mayor Dimitris Kamizis has suggested that the influx of rich visitors to the area is putting a strain on the town’s infrastructure. “The most serious problem is that of water as swimming pools and gardens are very demanding,” he said. “The water table is already diminishing.”
Kranidi made the headlines this week when Dutch news website RTL published documents showing that the country’s royals had used 461,000 euros of taxpayers’ money to buy land around their Kranidi villa for the construction of a security fence.
