Avramopoulos, Hagel hammer out 'roadmap' of defense cooperation

Defense Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos emphasized, after talks with his American counterpart Chuck Hagel late on Thursday, the "truly excellent level of the Hellenic-American defence cooperation" and said the two men agreed that "today, more than ever, the defence cooperation between the USA and Greece has a geostrategic and essential significance."

The Pentagon issued a statement saying that bilateral defense cooperation was discussed extensively by the two men.

The talks focused on "determining issues which regard the roadmap of the US defence cooperation with our country, finding solutions for pending issues," Avramopoulos said. The two men also discussed "crucial geopolitical issues of our region, about the geostrategic role of Greece as an islet of stability and security in the wider region, as well as about the role that Greece may assume in the name of international legitimacy."

Although there were no statements confirming so, the talks are believed to have touched on the possible participation of Greek armed forces in American-led peace missions at a time that the US is seeking the support of allies in tackling volatile situations in Iraq and Syria.
