Vartholomaios calls for “fair, functional, permanent” Cyprus settlement
Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomaios on Monday stressed the need for a “fair, functional and permanent” settlement for the Cyprus problem based on international law.
During a visit to Imvros, the island off the mouth of the Dardenelles where he was born, the patriarch expressed his “brotherly love for all Cypriots” and said he prayed for a satisfactory conclusion to the island’s division “which has upset us all.”
A new round of United Nations-mediated peace talks aimed at solving the Cyprus problem began last spring.
