DIMAR chief Kouvelis hints about presidency

As the government seeks to play down rumors about its choice of candidate for president, with the term of incumbent Karolos Papoulias set to end in February, Democratic Left (DIMAR) leader Fotis Kouvelis rebuffed rumors that he has been approached but did not explicitly rule out in his interest in the role.

“The issue of the election of a president of the republic is one of broader consensuses,” Kouvelis told his party’s central committee over the weekend. “It will be judged when the time is right and that time is not now,” he said, adding that the matter depended also on “the policies which will be exercised.” Kouvelis’s statement followed reports suggesting that DIMAR will only consider backing him as a candidate if it sees a shift in the coalition’s policy away from austerity.
