Maniatis talks energy with Washington’s man in Athens

Energy Minister Yiannis Maniatis held a meeting yesterday with US Ambassador in Athens David D. Pearce to discuss possible natural gas supply problems that Europe may face this winter due to the crisis in Ukraine.

The two men focused on Greece’s proposal for the creation of a European emergency mechanism for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), aimed at a single European response to the problem of a possible shortage.

“Energy security constitutes a crucial and vital field of expression for European solidarity so we can face this emerging crisis in an effective manner,” stated Maniatis.

The minister also referred to Athens’s efforts toward the utilization of hydrocarbon reserves through the proclamation of international tenders and cited the positive prospects for the attraction of major oil industry players to Greece.
