School guards protest outside PASOK HQ

School guards enrolled in a mobility scheme involving forced transfers and layoffs on Wednesday staged a protest outside coalition partners PASOK headquarters in Athens.

Protesters demanded that the government repeal a decision to eliminate their job and rehire all dismissed staff.

During talks with school guards’ representatives, PASOK’s press spokesman Dimitris Karydis defended the party’s efforts to minimize the pain, saying it had succeeded in raising the number of school guards transferred to other positions in the public sector as part of the mobility scheme from 300 to 550.

A delegation of school guards was set to meet with Interior Minister Argyris Dinopoulos later in the day.
