Wholesale and retail commerce absorb bulk of Greek workers

Most working Greeks are employed in wholesale or retail commerce, according to census data released on Wednesday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), followed by the public administration and defense sectors.

The areas that attract the most foreign citizens in Greece are construction and agriculture.

The financially active population of the country in 2011 amounted to 42.4 percent of the whole, or 4,586,636 people.

The most worrying finding was that at least four in 10 single mothers of children below 18 years old were unemployed, and the jobless rate has grown further since the census was taken.
