Samaras to meet Erdogan on Friday

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is expected to meet newly elected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday morning in Cardiff, Wales. The meeting is being organized on the sidelines of a two-day NATO summit which ends on the same day.

The unofficial meeting was billed as an uncomfortable encounter following Erdogan’s provocative comments regarding Greece’s position vis a vis Cyprus earlier this week.

The encounter’s agenda included the topics of Cyprus and a new round of talks regarding the island’s reunification as well as Greek-Turkish relations.

Samaras arrived in Cardiff on Thursday morning, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Evangelos Venizelos.

The Greek premier was also scheduled to meet with his Canadian, Albanian and Bulgarian counterparts.
