Spyros Louis cup in Switzerland for Lausanne exhibition

The silver cup given to marathon winner Spyros Louis at the first Modern Olympic Games, held in Athens in 1896, has been temporarily moved to Switzerland in order to be exhibited at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) said on Thursday.

The cup will remain there for six months before returning to the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

SNF said the cup will go on permanent display at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, currently under construction on the city’s southern coast in Faliro, after its completion in 2016.

The cup was purchased by SNF for 541,250 pounds ($860,000) at a Christie’s auction in London in 2012.
