Athens center revamp to begin mid-2015, says government official

A much-lauded project to revamp the center of Athens, involving the pedestrianization of central Panepistimiou Street and sprucing up shabby Omonia Square, is set to begin in mid-2015, after the tender has been completed earlier in the year, the general secretary for public works, Stratos Simopoulos, said on Thursday.

Simopoulos also offered reassurances that the changes would not increase traffic in the area.

The project, designed by Dutch architects Okra, will cost 90 million euros that will come from the National Strategic Reference Framework and the Environment Ministry’s operational program titled “Environment and Sustainable Development.”
