Works on Athens Metro Line 4 to start at the end of 2015

Works on the creation of a Line Four for the Athens Metro are to begin at the end of 2015, Transport and Infrastructure Works Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said on Thursday, noting that the new line will have 14 stations rather than nine as had been initially announced.

In addition to a route connecting Evangelismos to Veikou Woods, the first section of Line 4 is to stretch some 13 kilometers from the Veikou Woods to Goudi, serving some 220,000 people in densely-populated areas such as Galatsi, Kypseli Exarchia and Zografou. It is expected to be ready in seven years from the launch of construction and will be followed by an extension from Galatsi to Maroussi, bringing the total length of the line to 32 kilometers featuring 30 stations.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis hailed the plan as “a very significant project.

According to Attiko Metro, the necessary feasibility studies have been carried out with sources indicating that the environmental benefits of the project will be significant with 53,000 fewer vehicles circulating on the roads.

The budget for the construction of the 14 stations is 1.2 billion euros which is to come from European Union structural funds and funding from the European Investment Bank.
