Ex-mayor in ICU after suffering heart attack in prison

The former mayor of Thessaloniki, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, was under observation in the intensive care unit of the Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack on Monday.

The 67-year-old ex-official, who is serving a 12-year sentence at nearby Diavata Prison for embezzling nearly 18 million euros from municipal coffers, was rushed to hospital on Monday evening after complaining of intense chest pains.

Doctors on Tuesday morning confirmed that he had suffered a heart attack and are keeping him under close observation.
