Body found on Corfu coast believed to be of Norman Atlantic passenger
The mutilated corpse of a woman that was discovered washed up last week on a beach on the northwestern coast of Corfu is believed to be that of a passenger from the Norman Atlantic ferry which went up in flames on December 28 while en route from Greece to Italy.
The discovery of the body brings the total death toll from the fire on the Greek-owned ferry to 11.
Another 17 passengers remain unaccounted for and are feared dead.
A Corfu prosecutor said the woman drowned and was probably mutilated by dogfish sharks after her death.
The woman’s age is estimated at between 40 and 50, according to the coroner, Yiannis Aivatidis, who is to submit his report to Italian authorities who are leading the investigation into the tragedy.
