Kavala mayor blocks Jewish memorial

Kavala Mayor Dimitra Tsanaka has come under fire after stopping the unveiling of a memorial to the city’s 1,484 Jews that were killed by Nazi troops, because it featured the Star of David.

In comments made Friday, the Education Ministry’s general secretary Giorgos Kalatzis voiced his regret over the decision – which was backed by the majority of the city’s municipal council – saying that Kavala risked being the first Greek city to turn down a monument raised for its own citizens.

The Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KISE) also attacked the decision as “unacceptable, immoral and insulting.”

Tsanaka was elected mayor in 2014, backed by conservative New Democracy.
