Lafazanis says government will not accept third austerity package

Greece is striving to reach an agreement with international creditors but does not want a “third memorandum that will bring harsh austerity, suffering and deprivation to the Greek people,” Energy Minister Panayiotis Lafazanis told a conference on Thursday.

“We know that at this point all options are hard,” Lafazanis, one of ruling SYRIZA’s hardliners said. “But the worst of these, the most debilitating, humiliating and unbearable is a deal that will signal the surrender, pillaging and subjugation of the country and the people. This is a choice we will never make.”

Lafazanis went on to say that Greece has alternative options to a new bailout deal with the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund, stressing that “there is no gun pointed at its head.”
