Greek president thanks French counterpart for role in talks
Prokopis Pavlopoulos called French President Francois Hollande on Monday to thank him for the decisive role he played in facilitating an agreement between Greece and its lenders.
Hollande earlier hailed Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras for making a “courageous choice” in agreeing to the package of reforms despite the political risks at home.
Hollande met several times with Tsipras, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Council President Donald Tusk on the sidelines of a eurozone leaders’ summit in Brussels to thrash out the details of a third bailout for Greece.
When news of an accord in Brussels filtered through, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls tweeted: “Agreement! Greece is Europe.”
“Even if it was long, I think for Europe this was a good night, and a good day,” said Hollande after the 17-hour negotiations concluded.
During his call on Monday, Pavlopoulos also offered his best wishes to Hollande for today’s celebrations of Bastille Day.
