Most Greeks want to stay in euro and reach a deal

Seven in 10 Greeks are in favor the government reaching an agreement with the country’s creditors, even if it involves tough measures, according to an opinion poll published on Saturday.

The Palmos Analysis survey for Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper indicates that just 24 percent of Greeks would prefer an exit from the euro over a deal with lenders.

Similarly, 73 percent want Greece to stay in the single currency, including 66 percent of SYRIZA supporters, against 20 percent who want to return to the drachma, an option chosen by just 26 percent of the ruling party’s voters.

The poll also indicated that support for SYRIZA is far ahead of the other parties: 42.5 percent of respondents said they would vote for the leftist party in national elections, while 21.5 percent support New Democracy.

They are followed by To Potami on 8 percent, Golden Dawn on 6.5, PASOK on 6, KKE on 5, and Independent Greeks on 3 percent. Seven percent said they would back other parties.
