Araouzou lands silver at Worlds’ Open Water 5k

Greek swimming champion Kelly Araouzou earned the silver medal on the opening day of the FINA World Aquatics Championship in Russia on Saturday.

Araouzou finished second in the five-kilometer open water race, clocking 58 minutes and 49.8 seconds.

The Greek swimmer was just 1.4 seconds behind winner Haley Anderson from the United States who won with a time of 58:48.4

The 24-year-old won her first Worlds medal in an individuals event, after winning silver two years ago in the team event at the same distance.

She will now turn her attention to the 10k race on Tuesday, that is a criterion for a spot in the Rio 2016 Olympics, as the top 10 athletes in that event will automatically earn an Olympic ticket.
