Swimming legend Gianniotis lands bronze, qualifies for Rio
Greek swimming legend Spyros Gianniotis earned bronze in the 10-kilometer open water race of the FINA World Aquatics Championship in Kazan on Monday.
The 35-year-old Greek champion finished third in the race and secured a ticket for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, just over a year from now. He clocked one hour 50 minutes and 0.7 seconds.
The Corfu-born swimmer, who is half-English, had won the two previous world championships in that distance. This is his seventh World Championship medal.
Gianniotis’s medal on Monday was the second for Greece in this competition after Kelly Araouzou’s silver on Saturday at the 5k. She is competing in the 10k on Tuesday.
