Still captive

Greeks are paying a hefty price for SYRIZA’s obsessions and experiments. Until now we have tolerated the party’s singular mix of naivete and arrogance in the supposed “negotiation” with the country’s partners, while the economy is sinking and Greece is losing its very last traces of credibility.

Now SYRIZA’s inner-party drama is reaching a climax with the party’s central committee convening today to decide how the coalition of rival groups will carry on. Will Prime Minister and SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras be able to impose his position or will he succumb to the ideologists who place ideas above reality and the country’s interests? Tsipras yesterday clarified that without a parliamentary majority he will go to elections. It would be naive to believe that SYRIZA’s factions would take into account the dangers of yet another pre-election period.

The country remains a hostage to SYRIZA’s splinter groups, while the day of steps toward growth seem far away.
