Over 280,000 people apply for EU-backed food aid in Greece
More than 280,000 people have applied for assistance through the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) in Greece, the state-run Athens-Macedonian news agency reported on Thursday.
The National Institute for Labor and Human Resources, which is responsible for coordinating the disbursement of funding in Greece under the aegis of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, said that is has received over 130,742 applications, representing more than 280,000 people, for entry into a food program since mid-July.
Of these applications, 50,226 have been submitted by individuals and the rest by partner organizations such as public bodies, nongovernmental organizations and charities representing people in need.
The deadline for applications has been extended to August 26.
The FEAD supports EU countries’ actions to provide material assistance to the most deprived. This includes food, clothing and other essential items for personal use such as hygiene products.
