Tsipras seeks to cool talk of him calling snap polls

There was an attempt on Monday by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, via government spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili, to downplay the possibility of snap elections without completely dismissing the idea of Greeks going to the ballot again soon.

Sources said that Tsipras wants to dampen the discussion within his own party about snap elections but also wants to show opposition parties and Greece’s lenders that the first thought on his mind after securing a third bailout will not be to seek a fresh mandate.

“The speculation about elections that has been cultivated over the last few days is not beneficial, nor does it reflect reality,” she said. “What is at the head of the government’s planning at the moment is the completion of the agreement with the institutions and what will happen after that. The first, and main, goal is putting into effect the pledge at the recent Euro Summit regarding debt relief.”

“There are no thoughts of elections,” she added.
Sources told Kathimerini that Gerovasili’s statement did not mean Tsipras is abandoning all thoughts of holding snap elections but that he is rethinking his plans.
