Policemen tried to fleece island shop owners

Two policemen have been arrested on Zakynthos for allegedly trying to extort thousands of euros from store owners.

The two suspects, aged 31 and 34, told owners of shops on the Ionian island that they had been sent to Zakynthos from Athens to conduct checks on local businesses. They allegedly asked for a total of 20,000 euros not to carry out the bogus inspections.

They were arrested after collecting 10,540 euros in marked notes. The store owners had earlier tipped off the police. One suspect is a member of the financial police, the other an anti-terrorism officer.
