SYRIZA bubble ready to pop

The disappointment and anger Alexis Tsipras’s coalition government prompted among a significant part of the country’s youth is a serious issue.

Many young people believed that by voting for SYRIZA they were casting their ballot for an anti-systemic power. They had been swayed by SYRIZA’s pre-election promises for a new, fair and modern system of governance.

They have been bitterly disappointed in every respect.

The government made up of SYRIZA and Independent Greeks failed to break with the past or to cut Greece loose from its bailout commitments. What’s more, on the employment front, young people’s prospects have deteriorated over the past few months.

The prime minister needs to be careful because this part of the disenchanted youth, the majority of them out of work, is a cauldron ready to boil over.

Greece’s pro-European parties need to introduce new faces and refresh their rhetoric so that they can convince the country’s young people that there is a future after the “SYRIZA bubble.”
