Coast guard unable to find more survivors from Faramakonisi sinking
The Greek coast guard has not been able to find any more survivors from the capsizing of a boat carrying refugees off the island of Farmakonisi on Sunday.
The death toll from the accident stands at 34, including four babies and 10 children. However, authorities have not been able to establish how many people are missing as they do not have a final head count for the number of refugees on board the boat that sank in the eastern Aegean.
Authorities said that divers recovered eight bodies from the vessel. The coast guard rescued 68 people, while another 31 swam to safety.
The head of the Greek Coast Guard, Athanasios Athanasopoulos has travelled to Farmakonisi to coordinate the search and rescue operation.
The coast guard said in a statement on Monday that it had rescued 1,429 refugees and migrants in 58 incidents over the previous three days.
