Greek prosecutor calls for 18 to stand trial over defense systems
An appeals court prosecutor has called for a total of 18 people, including former senior defense officials and army officers, to be indicted in connection with the acquisition of an electronic defense system from businessman Thomas Liakounakos.
The entrepreneur, who was last summer ordered to post 300,000 euros in bail and banned from leaving the country in connection with the ongoing probe, is among those who are to stand trial.
Former Defense Ministry officials Antonis Kantas, Giorgos Koliris and Evangelos Vasilakos are on the list of defendants who face criminal charges of breach of faith.
According to prosecutors, Liakounakos’s company SONAK allegedly received a 35-million-euro commission on behalf of the Greek state but failed to deliver the defense software.
A council of appeals court judges is to decide whether to approve the prosecutor’s proposal for the indictments.
