Judges indict 35 in Postbank case

A total of 35 people are to stand trial in connection with the granting of hundreds of unsecured loans by the now defunct Hellenic Postbank, a council of appeals court judges in Athens decided Tuesday.

The judges decided that charges against all the key suspects, including the bank’s former head, Angelos Filippidis, the ex-CEO of the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund, Anastasia Sakellariou, and businessmen Victor Restis, Lavrentis Lavrentiadis and Dimitris Kontominas, should stand.

According to a prosecutor’s report, half a billion euros was issued in suspicious loans by the bank between 2007 and 2012. The loans were issued without guarantees and with favorable terms to several companies, even overindebted ones, with much of the money ending up in the personal bank accounts of some of the business owners who benefited.
