PAOK holds Dortmund to a 1-1 draw

PAOK snatched a point from German giant Borussia Dortmund in Greece drawing 1-1 in the second round of games for the Europa League group stage on Thursday, while Asteras Tripolis suffered a 4-0 defeat to another German team, Schalke, away.

PAOK was second best to its German visitors, but scored through a counter attack that had Robert Mak break free and send a diagonal shot into the Dortmund net on the 34th.

Eighteen minutes from time Borussia equalized as PAOK keeper Robin Olsen misjudged a Gonzalo Castro cross and saw the ball go into his net for 1-1. The Germans missed several chances to win the game, but it was not meant to be.

The match was marred by clashes of Dortmund supporters with the police in the second half.

This was the second point for PAOK in as many games. Up next for PAOK is a home game against Russian side Krasnodar on October 22.

Asteras suffered a nightmare night in the hands of Schalke at Gelsenkirchen, as it crumbled after the first 20 minutes of the game.

Franco di Santo scored a genuine hat-trick for Schalke putting three past the Greek defense from the 28th to the 44th minute, with Klaas Jan Huntelaar rounding off Asteras’s routing just before full-time.

The Tripoli team is left with one point from two group games. and will face APOEL next in Nicosia on October 22.
