Hellas Gold miners expected to return to work on Monday
Employees of Hellas Gold were expected on Monday to return to work at the company’s mines at Skouries in Halkidiki, northeastern Greece, following a Council of State decision allowing the sites to reopen until the country’s highest administrative court delivers its verdict later this month in a dispute between the Greek government and the mining company.
Hellas Gold, a subsidiary of Canada’s Eldorado, appealed a decision reached by Energy Minister Panos Skourletis in August which ordered the suspension of the approval of the company’s technical study. Following the ministerial decision, mining operations were suspended.
The Greek government called for the suspension on the grounds that flash-melting process tests were carried out in Finland as opposed to the Greek mines.
Meanwhile, Hellas Gold union representatives held rallies over the weekend in Halkidiki in order to inform local residents of recent developments.
