Greek ministry cleaners’ appeal postponed until May

A Supreme Court hearing of the appeal of 397 Finance Ministry cleaners who were dismissed as part of cost-cutting plans by the previous conservative-led coalition was postponed until May 31 on Tuesday.

The cleaners were rehired by SYRIZA’s first administration, which introduced legislation reversing previous decisions to lay off civil servants or put them in a so-called mobility scheme.

However, the state has not formally withdrawn the appeal lodged by the previous conservative-led government, noting that as the cleaners were put into a mobility scheme rather than being unfairly dismissed, they do not have the right to claim wages retroactively for the 20 months that they were in the scheme.
