Over 2,000 refugees disembark at Piraeus, more expected

Over 2,000 refugees disembarked at the Greek capital’s main port of Piraeus on Thursday morning from the islands of the Aegean and more were expected to arrive later in the day.

The Nissos Rodos ferry boat sailed 170 refugees from Chios and 590 from Lesvos, while the Blue Star carried 390 and 1,005 from each island respectively.

At noon, meanwhile, the Eleftherios Venizelos is expected to bring an additional 2,493 refugees from the islands to the Greek capital as part of efforts to decrease pressure on the island of the Aegean, which are struggling with hundreds of arrivals every day.
