Second casualty reported from Lefkada quake

The body of an elderly woman was discovered in her home on the Ionian island of Lefkada on Tuesday, bringing the death toll from an earthquake earlier in the day to two, local authorities have reported.

The first casualty to be reported was a 60-year-old woman who was crushed by a falling rock that smashed through the wall of her home in Ponti Vassilikis during the tremor, which had an estimated force of 6.1-6.3 on the Richter scale.

The fire service said that the elderly woman died in her home in the village of Athani. There were conflicting reports regarding her age and no details as to the circumstances of her death were immediately available.

The local general hospital is also said to be treating about a dozen people for injuries sustained in the tremor.

Local authorities are reporting widespread damage to the road network on the southwestern coast of the island, with inspections still ongoing.

The 9.10 a.m. earthquake is being followed by several aftershocks, the biggest so far measuring 5.2 Richter.

Seismologists have not ruled out the possibility that stronger tremors may follow.
