Siemens trial set to begin amid concerns over translations

The trial of dozens of suspects in the Siemens bribes-for-contracts scandal is due to begin on Thursday despite concerns about the charge sheet, which runs to more than 4,500 pages, and important documents relating to the case not having been translated into German.

The case is to be heard some seven years after judicial authorities launched an investigation into claims that the German electronic and engineering giant’s Greek branch bribed Greek politicians and public officials to secure state contracts.

However, there are concerns that since around a quarter of the suspects are German, the failure to translate key material could complicate the trial. Kathimerini understands that the Justice Ministry has not been able to find the 100,000 euros needed for the translation.
