Greece spends 800,000 euros on migrant healthcare
Greece has so far this year spent more than 800,000 euros in healthcare for about 2,000 migrants and refugees, according to data from the Health Ministry.
According to the data, which were presented by General Secretary for Public Health Yiannis Baskozos during a conference of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Rome on Tuesday, demand for the EKAV emergency medical assistance service has increased by 42 percent compared to 2014. Ambulance calls doubled between June – November – when the refugee crisis peaked – over the same period last year.
“[Greece] has managed to fulfill the current healthcare needs for refugees and migrants notwithstanding the absence of EU funding,” Baskozos told the conference.
