Good diplomacy
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s visit to Israel signals that the Greek political system seems to be maturing on issues of foreign policy, which for decades had been overshadowed by concerns that were guided more by emotion and fixations than logic.
The fact that a left-wing prime minister understands the significance of Greece’s strategic relationship with Israel shows that something is changing on this important front.
The exercise of foreign policy is exclusively about safeguarding the country’s national interests and alliances. Greece must naturally maintain its close ties to the Arab world, but its relationship with Israel has tangible strategic benefits in the sectors of energy and security and should be kept on a good footing no matter who is in power.
After all, all serious countries engage in exercises in good diplomatic relations.
