Seamen, journalists to join strike action next week

Ferry boats are expected to remain moored in ports around the country on Thursday as the union of seamen (PNO) has decided to join a strike called by the country’s private and public sector umbrella unions, GSEE and ADEDY respectively.

In a statement, PNO said its members were joining Thursday’s industrial action in protest at the “demise” of their social security fund (NAT), lower pensions and increasing unemployment in their sector.

Meanwhile, the Panhellenic Journalists’ Union (POESY) also announced its participation in the protest action against the government’s policies, calling on its members to strike from 6 a.m. on Wednesday to 6 p.m. on Thursday.

POESY said the upcoming action was a protest against the government’s plans regarding the country’s social security system.
