Public transport to be disrupted during Thursday’s strike

Service on Athens buses, trolley buses, the ISAP electric railway, the metro and the tram will all be disrupted on Thursday as workers join a general strike called by the country’s two biggest unions, ADEDY and GSEE.

The action means that public transportation will only operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. It will also affect train travel as all service will be halted on the OSE national rail network and the Proastiakos suburban railway, meaning there will be no service from Doukissis Plakentias metro station to Athens International Airport.

The strike has been organized in response to planned reforms of the social security system, which may lead to further cuts in pensions and benefits. A rally at Parliament in downtown Athens is also planned.

Public transport workers, including ferry boat staff, are also planning more action in December to protest the planned sale of part of Piraeus port.
