Seven arrested for vandalizing offices as Rouvikonas claims responsibility
The anarchist group Rouvikonas – the Greek name for Rubicon – on Wednesday claimed responsibility for a raid on the offices of Teiresias, the electronic database for insolvent borrowers, in Maroussi, north of Athens, earlier in the day.
A group of about 14 men arrived at the premises on motorbikes at around 9 a.m., a witness told Kathimerini English Edition.
The men, who had their faces covered with ski masks, entered the organization’s offices, where they proceeded to destroy computers, printers and other items using hammers and sledgehammers, the witness said, adding that they were shouting “We’ll tear it all down!”
No one was injured in the attack, though a Teiresias employee fainted and a security guard was briefly held back by the intruders. Police later arrested seven suspects.
In a statement posted on the Internet later in the day, Rouvikonas said it had carried out the attack in a protest against the government, which it accused of “imposing a new barrage of harsh taxes and other tough measures which harm the lower and middle classes but don’t touch the financially powerful, on the orders of the imperialist mechanisms of the European Union.”
The company’s operations could lead to “a very large number of economically vulnerable people losing their homes,” the statement said.
