Transport authorities mull ditching private security

Transport authorities are hoping to save money by terminating their contracts with private security firms and using police officers to guards stations and trains despite doubts about whether law enforcement has enough staff to carry out this work.

Kathimerini understands that fixed-track transport company STASY spends around 4 million euros a year on private security and would prefer instead to reach a less expensive agreement with the police.

However, this will require that some 250 policemen be made available. When STASY entered discussions with the police some 18 months ago to ask for 50 officers to create a separate unit, the urban transport police, it was told that this number of personnel could not be spared.
