Farmers threaten to intensify blockades of borders, roads, airports

TAGS: Agriculture, Economy

Farmers protesting the government's plans for pension reform on Friday threatened to intensify their blockades of key border crossings, road junctions and regional airports from Saturday at noon unless authorities offer concessions to their demands.

The decision to step up the protests was signed by the representatives of 62 blockades following six hours of talks at the headquarters of the Panhellenic Committee of Farmers and Producers in Katerini, near Thessaloniki.

On Thursday farmers lifted most of their road blockades in mainland Greece to allow protesters to travel to anti-austerity rallied planned to coincide with the general strike. However, although the barricades at Tempe and Nikaia were lifted, a blockade at the Isthmus of Corinth remained in place, causing traffic disruption.
