Digging a deeper hole

Leading international investors are losing faith in Greece and this is painfully evident at the Athens Stock Exchange.

Two of the principal reasons behind this are the political instability and the idea being floated about a new round of general elections – which have left many following Greek developments lost for words.

Another reason is the hostility displayed by certain government officials vis-a-vis foreign investment which has already arrived in Greece. Some of them simply don’t realize that they cannot treat Greek companies with foreign shareholders like 1980s public utilities, no matter how big the state’s stake.

Clearly, the global crisis is not boosting investor sentiment either at the moment.

But in the end, it’s us – and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who has proved unable to impose a unified strategy in this crucial sector – who are digging our own grave.
