All talk and no action

It is true that in Greece local media have been used by certain people as a means of pressure to secure business contracts with the state.

At the same time, there are vital sectors of the economy in which rudimentary competition and laissez-faire rules do not apply.

In the past, several Greek governments promised to cut the cord between the media and those who do business with the state. They also said they would liberalize the market for goods and services.

The current coalition government promised a lot, but has delivered nothing at all. The only thing it appears to be interested in is sharing the pie as it sees fit, to the benefit of either invisible but powerful vested interests, with which it has developed a certain kind of modus vivendi, or its own cronies, in a modified form.

Nevertheless, the phenomena which ought to be tackled are still very much present.

The only target here is the control of power and information and this is something which has now become obvious to all.
