Toll protester faces final charge of 22,000 euros

A man who ran up an original bill of 430 euros by refusing to pay toll charges on the Egnatia Highway in northern Greece faces a final charge of 22,000 euros if he does not settle his debts by the end of the month.

Giorgos Theofanou is a member of the “I Won’t Pay” (Den Plirono) movement that came to prominence at the start of the crisis because its members refused to pay tolls and often forced open barriers.

He said Thursday that he has been handed a 8,500-euro fine by Egnatia Odos, the company that manages the national road. But this will rise to 22,000 euros if he does not meet the February 29 deadline.

However, Theofanou said that he would refuse to pay for ideological reasons.

“The roads have to be open to everyone,” he said, before announcing that members of the movement will protest outside the Egnatia Odos offices in Thermi near Thessaloniki next Thursday.
