Too many officers guarding ex-politicians, minister says
Alternate Minister for Citizens’ Protection Nikos Toskas said Thursday that the government is working on a plan to reduce the number of policeman who serve as security for former politicians so they can be deployed elsewhere.
Responding to questions in Parliament, Toskas said 103 officers are guarding former PASOK officials and another 61 act as protection for ex-New Democracy politicians.
“We are trying to find solutions but also to redistribute the forces that are wasted on guarding people who there is no reason to protect,” said the minister.
Toskas confirmed that the police presence around PASOK’s headquarters in central Athens has been strengthened after the building was firebombed three times over the last few weeks.
