Fines set to rain down on drivers

Officials from the Finance and Transport ministries hope to have cross-checked registers to root out drivers whose vehicles haven’t passed the roadworthiness test, who are uninsured or have not paid their road tax by the end of February.

The number of cars, trucks and motorcycles currently circulating without having passed the safety inspection is thought to be above 600,000. The owners of these vehicles face a fine of 150 euros each.

Authorities also estimate that 800,000 motorists have not paid road tax. They will have to settle their bill within 2016 and pay a fine of 250 euros.
