Bogus doctor with fake degree extradited by US

A Ferrari-driving Greek doctor who got his job in the national healthcare system using a fake university degree has been extradited to Greece from the USA, where he was recently arrested.

The 58-year-old worked as the head of a medical center on the island of Skyros between 2000 and 2014 but it has emerged that he never received a degree in medicine from Sapienza University in Rome, as he claimed. He was investigated following complaints by a citizen but disappeared after he was found to be in possession of forged qualifications.

The bogus doctor was sentenced to 21 months in jail in his absence, which led to an international warrant for his arrest being issued. He was found in the USA and extradited to Greece on Sunday.

Authorities in Greece found that the 58-year-old had three different identity cards and three tax registration numbers, leading them to believe he was involved in other criminal activity.
