Top judge to investigate Vgenopoulos decision
Supreme Court president Vassiliki Thanou is to investigate a recent decision by deputy prosecutor Georgia Tsatani to shelve a probe into businessman Andreas Vgenopoulos over the 2013 collapse of Laiki Bank, where he was chairman.
Thanou will be looking into why the case was dropped at the end of an investigation lasting several years and why Tsatani did not assign the probe to anti-corruption or financial prosecutors.
Vgenopoulos is also being investigated in Cyprus in connection to Laiki. He denies any wrongdoing.
Thanou’s action comes after judicial authorities on Cyprus questioned the decision to shelve the investigation into the businessman’s activities.
