Far-left party members occupy EU offices in Athens

Members of the far-left Popular Unity party (LAE) carried out a “symbolic” sit-in on Wednesday at the European Union’s office in central Athens.

Protesters also hung a huge banner on the building facade on central Vasilissis Sofias Avenue that read, “Barriers for refugees. Memoranda for the Greek people.”

The party accused police of using heavy-handed tactics to disperse its members.

“Despite the symbolic and peaceful nature of our protest, police used violent means to disperse demonstrators,” it said in a statement.
